some firsts

Whew, it has been a whirlwind of a week. I can’t believe it’s already late Friday night. I always thought that if you missed a lot of sleep that it would make the days and weeks seem longer, but right now they are just flying by (did you catch the part about losing sleep?).

Today Curtis hads some important firsts. We gave him his first sponge bath. Actually, he has had a couple already at the hospital, so this is more of an important first for mom and dad. It went well and he fussed even less than he does when we change his diaper. Here is a picture right after our first sponge bath (more below the picture):
Snug as a bug in a rug...
We also cut his fingernails for the first time. I guess this is another first that is a more momentous occasion for new parents. It went well, and he still has all of his fingers. I bought some safety clippers from the pharmacy that made the job pretty easy. That and the fact that I read somewhere that you should clip them while he is sleeping. He didn’t even know what happened ;-)

We also took him outside for the first time. I stood in the front yard and showed him the colors in the trees. I don’t think he can see color yet, but it was fun anyhow. Then we went next door to visit our land-lady who is 92 years old. She was so happy to see Curtis - she said it “made her day”. She held him for at least a half and hour. It was pretty cool to see a 92 year old woman holding a 4 day old.

Well, that’s about it from the dowski front. Here is one last picture for your viewing pleasure - one of me and my son!
A chip off the old block...

love all the pictures. great to follow the first week of Curtis. isn’t it crazy how important fingernail clipping becomes?

yeah, without clipping those nails, his flailing-arms-while-crying bit would be more painful. poor little guy.

Sarah was going to keep the fingernails and put them in a scrapbook but she left them resting on a book and her mom picked up the book to read it (oops). i tried to find the miniscule little things on the floor, but when all of them put together would probably lose a fight with a piece of rice, there wasn’t much i could find.

it’s probably good in the long run since Curtis would probably find it somewhat gross. maybe we should just keep the umbilical cord instead ;-)
